Welcome to “Queer, Candid and Cringe” - Jay Jacobs

For me, there was nothing more awkward and candid than growing up as a closeted homosexual. Like many young queer people, growing up somewhat ‘different’ to the rest of the people around you is an extremely formative aspect of adolescence. From being profoundly uncomfortable in conversations regarding relationships and sex to creating elaborate scenarios spun to protect the façade of heterosexuality, it wasn’t until I finally met other queer people that I realised the universality of this experience.

It goes without saying that it is important to acknowledge how difficult these times were; the experience of having to conceal my identity and suppress myself is an ordeal I hope never to endure again. However, the sharing of these universal experiences perhaps held more significance than the memories themselves. For the first time, I wasn't isolated in my experiences; instead, I felt like an integral part of a collective community. I was able to reminisce and learn to appreciate so many moments for their awkward yet completely unfiltered authenticity.

"Queer, Candid, and Cringe" will act as a digital platform where we can openly share our personal stories and experiences. In turn, these stories will showcase the valuable lessons we've learned in hindsight, celebrate the beauty in our unique experiences, and foster a sense of connection among all who visit. Whether you wish to stay anonymous or not, these blog posts aim to provide comfort to those who may be feeling isolated in their own journeys through the power of humour and raw honesty.
